Short answer: Heart of the Ocean comes from scenario challenges, journey objectives, chests, treasure hunts and Voyagers, and you spend it in the reward stages of Calamity Towers and The Sunken Lord. Pirate Coins and Ambergris drop from Tide Elves you catch while beachcombing and are traded at the beachcombing shop. Each Haywire sea has its own material: Mist of Deceit Wicks in Reefshadow Bay, Black Tide Clots (also written Darktide Clot) in Misty Marsh, Bottled Raindrops in Spring Valley and Skyfire Gold in Falling Ember. Coral Ore comes from the seafloor.

Two names, one material: Black Tide Clot vs Darktide Clot
If you searched for Darktide Clot, you want the Black Tide Clot. The developer’s dev blog and the item database both use “Black Tide Clot”. “Darktide Clot” is the spelling some community posts and videos use, including one uploaded before launch. Searching the database for “Darktide” returns nothing. This page uses Black Tide Clot.
Isles of Abyss adds three kinds of new material: scenario currencies you trade or spend, Haywire materials that only appear in one sea’s special weather, and ores from the seafloor. The tables below give where each comes from and what it is for. The weather itself and its counter items are on the Haywire Zones page; this page doesn’t repeat those recipes.
Currencies: Heart of the Ocean, Pirate Coin, Ambergris
| material | where you get it | what it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Heart of the Ocean | Scenario challenges, journey objectives, chests and treasure hunts, Voyagers | Opening the reward stage after Calamity Towers and The Sunken Lord, which gives the new mods |
| Pirate Coin | Tide Elves caught while beachcombing (chance to drop) | Trading at the beachcombing shop. The database says certain NPCs swap large amounts for Energy Links |
| Ambergris | Tide Elves caught while beachcombing | Trading at the beachcombing shop; camp merchants buy it |

Heart of the Ocean is the scenario’s rare currency. The patch notes tie it to the two new mods: Precision Load (lower-body armor mod: hitting weak spots from long range refunds ammo) and Turret Enhancement (gloves: more damage from facilities you operate, such as ship cannons). You get those mods by beating The Sunken Lord or by spending Heart of the Ocean in the Calamity Tower and Sunken Lord reward stages. The database describes the item as a crystal “condensed deep within the Sea Ruins” that opens Calamity Vaults.

Treasure maps pay out in Heart of the Ocean too. In the clip above one underwater treasure gave two, alongside Coral Ore and a Pearl. Treasure maps come from beachcombing, fishing, quests and settlements, and drift bottles can hold them; the diving guide covers going down to the wrecks.
Pirate Coins and Ambergris come from Tide Elves, small creatures you catch while beachcombing in sand holes, bubbling shallows and rock gaps. The patch notes say Tide Elves can drop Coral Ore and Pirate Coins. The database lists both coins and Ambergris as low-chance drops and names Rod (Deepwind / Dragon Abyss Shipping Company) and Mucho (Sea City Safe Haven) as the NPCs who redeem them in bulk for Energy Links. The patch notes also say some beachcombing finds sell to merchants for “batteries”. Whether that is a separate currency hasn’t been explained yet.
Haywire materials: one per sea
Each of the four Haywire seas has a material you can only gather while its weather is active. These are the materials behind most mid- and late-game ship parts and facilities.
| material | sea | how you gather it | what it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mist of Deceit Wick | Reefshadow Bay | Collect Mist Core Grass during Mist of Deceit | Cannon ammunition and power facilities. The database lists the Mist Core Cannonball, solar, hydro and biomass generators, and the Lv. 6 Freezing Cannon |
| Black Tide Clot (Darktide Clot) | Misty Marsh | Gather the black water near spore growths during Black Tide; costs Sanity | Diving gear and water-cycle facilities. The database lists water filters, refinery facilities and the Calamity Purification Furnace |
| Bottled Raindrops | Spring Valley | Kill enemies or harvest crops in Time Rain | Water production, farming and breeding facilities. The database adds the Drilling Well, Abyssal Sea Fishing Rod, Advanced Trawl, Revive Station and Territory Shield |
| Skyfire Gold | Falling Ember | Mine meteors during Skyfire | Alloy ship structures and automated gathering facilities. Every alloy hull, deck and bulwark piece needs it |

A few things the table can’t fit:
- Black Tide Clots cost Sanity to gather, and high Sanity gets you more of them. Gather with the Black Tide Protective Mask on. One test-server guide says the water purifier recipe now needs Clots from the timed Black Tide pollution zones. test server
- Clots can also become fuel. The database lists a Black Tide Clot Transformation Technology blueprint that unlocks turning Clots into fuel, from crates in underwater strongholds or Phase II Calamity Zones. Fuel types and fuel farms are on the ship fuel page.
- Skyfire Gold gates the top hull tier. Hull materials go wood → iron → steel → alloy, and alloy needs Skyfire Gold. See How to build a ship for hull upgrades.
- Black Tide Fuel appears in the same official list, but you pump it with a Drilling Well rather than gather it in a sea. It’s covered under Haywire Zones and ship fuel.
Ores: Coral Ore and Stardust Ore
| material | where you get it | what it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Coral Ore | Coral mineral clusters on the seafloor (the database says mine them with an Electric Drill); Tide Elves; treasure hunts | Facilities and furniture, per the item text. The database also lists alloy ship parts, advanced fuel and electric propellers, and Lv. 6 cannons |
| Stardust Ore | Brought into Misty Marsh by the Black Tide | The database lists it as an older Pollution Zone ore used for Stardust Ingots, Stardust Source and similar crafts |
src: dev blog (2026-10-16) · patch notes (2026-10-21) · oncehumandb item pages
Coral mineral clusters sit among the shipwrecks, sunken buildings and underwater laboratories. Glowing algae on the surface often marks something below. Deeper water means more pollution, so bring a diving suit (see the diving guide).
Don’t mix up Stardust Ore with Stardust Source, a different material. Stardust Source drops from Voyagers and, according to Anestic, from the Calamity Tentacles that spawn on land, which are also a handy source of acid.

Anestic’s farming tip: Voyagers always drop two selection crates (pick a weapon body or a body liner) plus other materials, and the reward tier follows the region’s level. They tend to follow similar routes, so mark good spots on your map and switch worlds at a world stone to find another.
Auto-mining the Haywire materials
You don’t have to gather everything by hand. The database lists two layers of tech for each Haywire material.
- A mining technology blueprint. Reverse-Engineered Blueprint: Black Tide Clot Mining Technology (and matching ones for Mist of Deceit Wick, Bottled Raindrops and Skyfire Gold) come from wilderness exploration. Reverse-engineer them at the Tech Research Workbench.
- An auto-mining technology. Clot Auto Mining Technology is a Tier 7 node: it lets an Extraction Pump and a Brewing Barrel keep producing Black Tide Clots. Its blueprint drops from Phase II Voyagers. Wick Auto Mining Technology does the same for Mist of Deceit Wicks, and search results show a Time Rain Auto Mining Technology as well.
Some players search for a Mining Platform for this. The developer hasn’t said how the land Mining Platform relates to the Haywire auto-mining tech, or published the recipes for either auto-mining blueprint; we’ll add them once the developer confirms.
Before you reverse-engineer facilities you find, Anestic suggests checking what they would give you at the Disassembly Bench. Some are worth more as materials such as gold ore or precision gear sets.
Precision Gear Set: where to get it
The Precision Gear Set (some guides shorten it to “Precision Gear”) is the early bottleneck for ship upgrades: propellers, side thrusters, boosters and cannons all need it. You don’t craft it from raw materials. You get it by taking ship gear apart.
- Find rare ship equipment. Settlements in the Haywire seas have rare propellers, thrusters, boosters and cannons you can pick up with the recycling tool. Grizl got four Precision Gear Sets from a side booster and a naval mine launcher.
- Dismantle it at the Disassembly Bench. IcyKitsunee also got them by dismantling a Shotgun Turret and a fuel propeller.
- Check before you reverse-engineer. Before you reverse-engineer a facility you find, compare what the Disassembly Bench would give you for it (Anestic’s tip above).
Yields aren’t guaranteed and no one has published exact numbers.

Easy extras while you sail
- Trawl nets on the ship collect fish, deviations and scrap as you travel. Anestic says you can fit up to four.
- Shells for early ship parts come from shell rocks on the beaches. Shells and conches also build some facilities.
- Oysters open into shells, conches, shellfish meat, seaweed or pearls; Abalone makes food or Adhesive; Ocean Trash smelts into plastic.
